| About the work: “City of Memory”, a collection of urban portraits of Shanghai’s old industrial workers’ quarters, warehouses and infrastructures, is an ode to the modern by Shanghai-born-and-bred flea-market lover and photographer Sun Ji. Inspired by Chinese painting, Sun Ji’s collages draw on contrast to build form and dose the right amount of dissimulation and display to open up a subjective inner space rather than present an objective physical form. Industry has marked Shanghai’s short history, but it is more than that: it is the framework and the soul of the modern metropolis. Here the author does more than simply present a record of buildings and houses, he paints a powerful landscape of life and locus of destiny. by Jiang Wei |
